Reflection
In the Design <> Research course, I explored how design research methods, especially cultural probes, can generate qualitative insights into abstract topics like atmosphere and community. The course places “research” at the center, emphasizing its role as both a foundation and inspiration for design. Through development and deployment of a cultural probe for the ESAC community, I learned to formulate effective research questions, collect qualitative data, and conduct thematic analysis to uncover patterns and themes. The course sharpened my analytical skills and helped me understand how research can form design opportunities. I also reflected on the Design Research (DR) process, comparing it with other design models like Design Thinking [1] and the Double Diamond [2]. I discovered that although the DR process differs in its focus, the reoccurring factors within the design processes are iterative loops. I realized that implementing DR methods, like cultural probes, into projects could strengthen the user understanding and lead to more targeted designs. This course taught me the value of integrating structured, qualitative research into early design stages to uncover user needs and create more meaningful, context-sensitive design outcomes.
